The role of social institutions in the functioning of the musical stratum of the Turkic peoples of the Volga-Caspian region: the ethnocultural context

Abstract.
The research aims to determine, based on scientific criteria from researchers in related disciplines (sociologists, historians, ethnomusicologists), the ethnic specificity of such spiritual types of social institutions as the institution of family and the institution of celebration among the Turkic peoples of the Volga-Caspian Basin. The paper explores the peculiarities of how musical genres function within the context of wedding and children’s rituals among representatives of the Turkic ethnic groups in the Volga-Caspian region. The scientific novelty lies in identifying both individual and pan-ethnic musical and folklore phenomena within social institutions (the institution of family, the institution of celebration) of the Turkic peoples of the Caspian region. The findings indicate that the musical folklore of Turkic communities inhabiting the Volga-Caspian region since the 16th century – such as Yurt Tatars, the Karagash, Kazakhs and Turkmens – serves as a significant verifier of processes taking place within social institutions, both within individual ethnic groups and in the sphere of interethnic interaction. These processes include those rooted in shared ethnogenetic ties as well as those shaped by millennia of coexistence.
