Development of a comprehensive approach to training translation and international relations students in the translation of coloratives based on English-language socio-political discourse texts

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive approach to training translation and international relations students in the translation of coloratives in socio-political texts. This approach includes a description of the method of pre-translation analysis of coloratives, the identification of competencies developed during the training process, and the design of a lesson plan that involves teaching practical adaptation techniques for English-language color-based realities to Russian political culture. The article presents practical experience in creating a semantically and logically complete segment of educational material, which implements effective technologies for teaching the translation of coloratives based on English-language socio-political discourse texts, and offers a full didactic cycle. The study utilizes data from a translation experiment conducted from September to December 2024, involving fourth-year students enrolled in the “Translation and Translation Studies” program at the A. S. Pushkin Leningrad State University, as well as master’s students from the “Global Politics and International Political Analysis” program at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, the authors proposed a comprehensive approach to teaching the translation of coloratives in socio-political texts, including a detailed description of the lesson organization procedure. The proposed teaching methods, the list of competencies developed, the plan for pre-translation analysis of political texts, the stages of the practical lesson, and the lesson plan are aimed at overcoming difficulties in teaching the translation of coloratives. The proposed comprehensive approach to training in the translation of coloratives can be regarded as an extension of didactic possibilities in the field of socio-political translation.
