Pedagogical legacy of Akhmad-Khadi Maksudi in the context of the modernization of the national school in the early 20th century

Abstract.
The purpose of this study is to identify the key scientific and methodological results of A.-Kh. Maksudi’s work and determine their significance for the modernization of the Tatar national school of the early 20th century, as well as for the contemporary theory and practice of multicultural education. His scientific and methodological work is considered in the context of the movement for the renewal of the Tatar national school (Jadidism) at the turn of the 20th century. It is shown that A.-Kh. Maksudi’s pedagogical views developed as a logical continuation of the Tatar pedagogical tradition and as a response to the demands of socio-economic modernization. Particular attention is paid to the primer “Mögallim äwwäl” (“First Teacher”) and the literacy teaching method it is based on, the improvement of Arabic script, as well as the didactic principles formulated by the scholar. The scientific novelty of this study lies in its analytical understanding of A.-Kh. Maksudi’s pedagogical legacy in the context of the modernization of the Tatar national school of the early 20th century: identifying the conditions of its formation, the key scientific and methodological results of his work, and their significance for modern educational theory and practice. The study established that A.-Kh. Maksudi’s pedagogical legacy represents a holistic didactic system; the historical, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions of its formation are identified; the didactic potential of the “Mögallim äwwäl” (“First Teacher”) primer and the sequential syllable-phonic method of teaching literacy are revealed; fifteen didactic principles formulated by the scholar are systematized, and the integrative nature of the corpus of teaching aids he created is substantiated.
