Abstract.
The author analyzes the translation of W. Collins’s “sensational” novel “The Woman in White”, which reveals the common ground of the English “sensational” and the Russian social-criminal novel. It is obvious that the Russian translator pays special attention to such artistic features of the English novel as polyphonic narration, the theme of person’s double and the psychologism of narration, which were in tune with the Russian literary finding of the second half of the XIX th century.
