Abstract. Christian orientation is characteristic for John Milton’s creative works as a whole. However, the period of 1640-1660 deserves special attention. During these years Milton worked with the sacred text in two directions: the appeal to the Bible as the supreme authority in the political treatises and the attempt of a poetic version of the sacred text in the translation of the Psalms. The particular attitude to the Scripture and the attempts of its artistic interpretation largely determined the originality of the subsequent poetry, and especially the poem “Paradise Lost”.
