Abstract. The article examines the images of journalists in the novels by the American writer and publicist William Dean Howells, analyzes the role of press in the social life of the country. Howells’ works are marked by the first manifestations of a stereotyped perception of a journalist: the negative attitude to the representatives of this profession is noticeable already in the XIX century. The paper focuses on the personages’ qualities illustrating the image of a journalist of that time.
