Abstract.
The article analyzes ecphrasis in the story by G. Flaubert “The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller” which belongs to the cycle “Three Tales”. The author provides intermedial analysis of Flaubert’s text and a stained glass in the Rouen Cathedral describing St. Julian’s life. The special attention is paid to the problem of “imposition” of the stained glass art principles on the text of the story. From this viewpoint the paper examines the intensity and importance of light and illumination in the story, manifestation of the radial long-range interaction principle (typical for stained glass art), interpretation of a stained glass transcendent meaning at the textual level.
