Abstract.
The article deals with the issues of teaching a foreign language at higher school. The author examines the importance of the formation of motivation and initiative in foreign-language speaking. It is highlighted that independence needs to be supported by initiative, a motivated wish of a student to learn or speak out. It is noted that the main component of the motivation-incentive foundation of speech initiative is a student’s personal interest.
