Abstract.
In the article, on the basis of the military diaries of 1943-1945 of the sailor-submariner of the Northern Fleet G. I. Sennikov, which have been introduced into scientific use for the first time, the circle of reading of front-line soldiers is ascertained, extracts from the books read are analyzed, and the functions of reading in the war are identified. The authors come to the conclusion that the most important function of reading in the war is therapeutic. In parallel, reading in the war included consideration, identification through the literary work, heroes, situations (self-identification, identification by the principle of one’s own - somebody else’s, self-identification through the concept “generation”, identification through the sense of the national: I am a part of the nation), and self-preservation (salvation of the “man in oneself” from destruction, degradation of personality, self-destruction).
