ORIGINALITY OF OEDIPUS’ IMAGE IN FRANZ FÜHMANN’S POST-WAR PROSE

Abstract.
The article examines the originality of the interpretation of king Oedipus’ image in the works of the German writer of the middle of the XX century Franz Fühmann. The authors aim to identify the causes and features of this mythological image transformation. The novelty of the work is conditioned by an attempt to compare directly the traditional and the writer’s images of Oedipus, as well as the assessment of the moral potential of a new image. The key point, determining the motivation of modern Oedipus in F. Fühmann’s interpretation, is the distorted perception of reality against the background of the events of the Second World War. The authors make a conclusion about the reduced nature of F. Fühmann’s borrowings of the problems of Sophocles’ tragedies and the noticeable stylistic “decline” of the image of Fühmann’s Oedipus, deprived deliberately of any positive features by the writer in relation to original Sophocles’ Oedipus.
