Abstract.
The article examines the proverbs discovered in Hieronymus Megiser’s grammar “Institutiones linguae Turcicae libri quator” (“The Basic Rules of the Turkic Language”) (1612). The first European grammar books were created with missionary purposes, which influenced the author’s choice of the Turkic texts and translated foreign proverbs. The linguistic material is analyzed from the viewpoint of thematic distribution, variable lexical content and its stylistic characteristic. The conducted analysis promotes deeper understanding of paroemiological worldview of the native speakers of the Turkic and other European languages.
