Interlanguage Semantic Similarities and National and Cultural Specificity of Lexeme “Intelligence” and Its French Translation Equivalents

Abstract.
The paper aims to identify the degree of semantic equivalence and national and cultural specificity of interlanguage Russian and French translation equivalents “ум” (intelligence) / “esprit, intelligence, raison, mentalité” through contrastive research. The article proves the correlation between semantics and the native speakers’ cognitive and cultural picture of the world, describes and applies the methodology of contrastive analysis of interlanguage translation equivalents at the macro- and microcomponent levels. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it reveals microsemantic denotative similarities and differences between the lexeme “ум” and its French translation equivalents and identifies the national and cultural specificity of the latter at the macrosemantic level. As a result, the conditional character of the notion “translation equivalent” has been proved and the national-specific semantic markers of interlanguage correlations have been identified.
