Difficulties in understanding and translating homoacronyms in English-language space discourse

Abstract. The aim of the study is to reveal the essence of the homoacronyms nominations in the modern English-language space discourse from the point of view of translation difficulties. The article examines space terminology represented by acronyms and homoacronyms functioning in the space discourse, reveals the difficulties of their understanding and translation into Russian. Considerable attention is paid to the problem of translating the figurative component of homoacronyms, on which the phenomenon of language play is built. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that for the first time homoacronyms have been identified in the space discourse, which is characterized by dynamic development and rapid emergence of new concepts requiring nomination and translation. As a result of the study, it is proven that the linguistic units in question are complex nominations combining the features of terms and neologisms, in most cases, they can be viewed as a specific type of acronyms – homoacronyms. It has been found that homoacronyms allow for a more concise and figurative expression of complex concepts, and their expressiveness determines the use of language play as a means of artistic expression. Consequently, the complexity of understanding and translating acronyms and the need for an individual approach to each specific case depend on these factors.
