Abstract.
The aim of the research is to identify the specific features of the term "euphemism". The article discusses the uncertainty of the criteria on the basis of which this term is traditionally attributed to the terminology of stylistics, and its functioning in the language of the media in French. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, it is proposed to consider the term "euphemism" as a super-term system, equally belonging to the sets of terms of many sections of sociology, psychology, and linguistics. As a result of the study, it was found that the dictionary definitions of this term within the framework of various scientific approaches do not include the position on the absence of their own linguistic form. The description of this lexeme is based on the theory of stages of assimilation of foreign words. It is shown that in French the term is completely assimilated and goes beyond the scope of scientific discourse, is used significantly wider in oral and written speech, and approaches the status of commonly used. A semantic and pragmatic analysis of the contexts of use of the term and its derivatives was carried out, the features of the syntactic and graphic design of statements with this word were considered, including pleonasms, and a new function was also revealed in journalism of the 2020s – hyperbolized praise, turning into sarcasm. The data obtained make it possible to propose that euphemism should be considered not a linguistic, but a sociolinguistic phenomenon.
