Information density of written scientific medical text in English in the era of digital globalization

Abstract. The aim of this study is to identify the specific features of information density in contemporary written scientific medical texts in English compared to previous periods (starting from the 1940s). Based on the nature of information density as a textual characteristic, the article identifies a system of criteria for studying the information density of scientific medical texts. An analysis based on the selected criteria was conducted on the material of English scientific articles in medicine. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the fact that the change in the information density of the text in diachrony is demonstrated using the example of scientific articles on medicine in English, and the features of the information density of modern written scientific medical texts are described. The results of the research indicate the information density of English-language scientific articles on medicine due to such means as the zero representation of the subject through the use of the passive voice; informationally compact sentences through the use of secondary predicates; graphical formatting of the text; mathematical symbols; abbreviations introduced by the author; visual representation of information; extensive increase in information through footnotes. It is emphasized that the features of information density for articles of recent years consist in its growth according to the criteria of "graphical formatting of the text," "abbreviations introduced by the author," and "hyperlinks."
