Typhlo commentary and audio description: problems of terminological unification

Abstract. The aim of this study is to identify the common features and differences by means of a comprehensive comparative analysis of the concepts of “typhlo commentary” and “audio description” and to outline the possibilities of their interchangeability in different contexts. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time a detailed semantic analysis of both terms was conducted, their complete semantic series were constructed according to various criteria (type of speech activity, target audience, method of implementation, field of application, etc.). This made it possible to propose a clear methodology for distinguishing the use of these terms in scientific research, taking into account both the normative-legal aspect and the contextual conditionality of their application. In the course of the work, theoretically substantiated conclusions were formulated about the essential difference between the terms “typhlo commentary” and “audio description”. The authors investigate the etymology, definitions, classification and practical application of both terms, emphasising the significant differences between Russian and international practice in this area. As a result, the specific characteristics and areas of application of the terms “typhlo commentary” and “audio description” were identified and systematised, and practical recommendations for the correct use of these terms in scientific publications and professional activities were formulated.
