Cognitively relevant functions of metaphorized terminology units (based on the terminology of innovative IT spheres)

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the cognitively relevant functions of metaphorized terminology units within scientific and industrial communication. The paper examines terms from innovative IT spheres, particularly cloud computing. The research critically analyzes not only the generally accepted functions of terms, traditionally distinguished in classical and functional terminology studies, such as the nominative function of a term, but also the cognitively relevant ones. In turn, we define the cognitively relevant functions of terminology units as aspects of the influence of terms and their semantic component on the format and content of the cognitive structures (knowledge structures) of the user of these terminology units. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, for the first time in Russian terminology studies, a hypothesis is put forward about the existence of two new functions in metaphorized terms of innovative IT spheres: routinizing and anxiolytic. The research findings showed that terminology units in modern English realize a whole range of diverse functions: routinizing, anxiolytic, pedagogical, epistemological, hermeneutic, heuristic, orienting, and the function of knowledge intersubjectivization. These functions affect the cognitive sphere, that is, the knowledge structures of both the subject and the recipient of scientific and industrial communication. Thus, according to the hypothesis, the anxiolytic function of metaphorized terms helps to reduce the level of anxiety towards new technologies, while the routinizing function increases ease of use due to the intuitive understanding of the mechanism of operation through comparison with already familiar objects.
