The influence of tonal interference on the perception of Chinese speech by Russian-speaking students

Abstract.
The research aims to determine how tonal errors in the Chinese speech of Russian-speaking students affect the success of communication with native speakers. The article examines typical tonal distortions and native speakers’ reactions to them, based on auditory, instrumental, and perceptual experiments. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, a paradoxical pattern of tonal error perception has been established and quantitatively confirmed: despite Russian-speaking students incorrectly producing 51.6% to 75.5% of all tones, polysyllabic words with errors are significantly easier for native speakers to recognize than monosyllabic ones. The results showed that substitutions of the second and fourth tones are the most critical for word recognition. Furthermore, the perception of distorted speech heavily depends on the linguistic context: high-frequency vocabulary is understood better and accent in isolated words is perceived as stronger than in continuous speech. It was found that tonal errors in individual words do not always hinder the understanding of the overall meaning of an utterance, as native speakers successfully compensate for misunderstanding through context.
