Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the specifics of the visual appearance of Boris Pilnyak’s novel “The Naked Year” in correlation with other levels of its artistic structure. The visual appearance of the novel “The Naked Year” was created through original techniques such as authorial text placement on the page space and typographic accidentals (the use of italics, uppercase letters, and pre-revolutionary orthography). The scientific novelty of this research lies in presenting for the first time the visual-graphic features of the novel “The Naked Year” as a stylistically formative factor within the context of other elements of poetic artistry. As a result of the study, it has been established that the visual appearance of the text serves as an essential means for Boris Pilnyak to embody his artistic concept: the arrangement of text on the page space and typographic accidentals allow him to create an author-specific rhythmic-intonational organization of the text in the novel “The Naked Year”. These methods help illustrate the expansion of chronotope by marking “alien” texts, visually formatting reflections and comments from the author who does not directly appear in the plot of the work, additionally emphasizing recurring events, scenes, and images, which together create a unified ornamental field at the visual level. These visual-graphical techniques highlight the mosaic structure of the novel and demonstrate the author’s aspiration towards integrating poetry and prose.
