Abstract.
The paper examines military prose of the 1940s-1950s, which gravitates towards the tradition of the Bildungsroman. The aim of the study is to identify the specifics of how the Bildungsroman tradition is refracted in Soviet military prose of the 1940s-1950s. The scientific originality lies in the fact that, for the first time, Soviet military prose is examined through the lens of the Bildungsroman. As a result, it has been established, firstly, that the hero’s path of development takes place within the key chronotopes of the road, home, localized within the family circle, and war, which limits his life to a specific battalion or unit. Secondly, time within the chronotope of war stretches and slows down, as the hero’s development is presented not on the scale of a specific time period, but within the war itself, in connection with which the character’s internal metamorphosis, his rebirth, occupies a short period of time. Thirdly, in the formation and upbringing of the hero in war novellas, the chronotope performs several crucial functions: threshold, initiatory, and regulatory. Fourthly, the eschatological boundary, associated with the commander-hero’s acute experience of death, the absence of reflection, and constant trials, determines his development as a decisive, brave personality, capable of making decisions and leading a collective.
