The schizoid character and “schizophrenic discourse” in 20th-century literature

Abstract.
This article examines the specific portrayal of the schizoid personality type in 20th-century literature. At the intersection of psychology and literary studies, the article analyzes how artistic means – such as narrative structure, chronotope, and character systems – embody the split characteristic of schizoids between a complex inner existence and a lack of engagement with objective reality. The aim of the study is to identify the narrative and imaginative strategies that allow literary writing to bridge the gap between “the world within” and “the world without” when portraying the schizoid consciousness. The scientific originality of this work lies in the synthesis of the clinical-psychological understanding of schizoid personality (H. Guntrip, N. McWilliams) with the conceptual framework of narratology (B. O. Korman) for analyzing “schizophrenic discourse” (G. Deleuze, F. Guattari). Drawing on the Strugatsky brothers’ novella “The Kid”, the study demonstrates an atypical case where the inner world of a schizoid character is presented not from an “I-subject” perspective, but through external evaluation, which serves to defamiliarize the tragedy of a fragmented psyche. The findings indicate that through metaphors of impenetrable personal boundaries, intellectualization, and communicative opacity, literature not only aestheticizes the tragedy of fragmentation and loneliness but also raises existential questions about the limits of the human in the context of a “diseased civilization”. The conclusions of this research can be applied to further studies of marginal consciousness in art and in the practice of teaching 20th-century literature.
