Linguistic means of expressing humor in the English-language academic genre of commencement speeches: linguo-stylistic, pragmatic, and discursive features

Abstract.
The aim of this study is to identify the linguo-stylistic, pragmatic, and discourse features of using humorous effects in the English-language academic genre of commencement speeches. The article examines the linguo-stylistic, pragmatic, and discourse mechanisms for realizing humor. The scientific novelty of the research lies in its pioneering investigation, based on English-language material, of humor markers within the commencement speech genre. The study found that the use of humor in this genre has a pragmatic effect, which is expressed through the application of phatic, impressive, didactic, and cathartic functions. The deployment of humor is characterized by the active participation of both the speech producer and recipient in the communication act. Building on this idea, two main scenarios are identified in commencement speeches: (1) the speaker consciously employs humor, and the audience adequately responds to the comedic intention; and (2) the speaker spontaneously shifts to a humorous tone, and the audience supports the mood set by the speaker. Furthermore, identified markers of a shift to a humorous tone include: references to personal life events or personal experience; the use of vocabulary with emotional-evaluative and colloquial-vernacular connotations; and various stylistic devices (lexical: paradox, antithesis, irony/self-irony, metaphors, epithets, hyperboles, comparisons; syntactic: intertextual inclusions, parenthetical constructions, and rhetorical questions).
