Tactile imagery in Russian and Chinese metaphor and phraseology: by the example of the verbs “grip” / 握 (wò), “pinch” / 捏 (niē), “pat” / 拍 (pâi)

Abstract.
Based on the theoretical frameworks of linguosensorics, embodied cognition theory, concepts of tactile metaphor, and lexical-phraseological imagery, this article conducts a comparative study of metaphorical and phraseological representations of tactile interaction in Russian and Chinese, using three pairs of gestures as examples: Rus. “жать” – Chin. “握 /wò/” ‘to hold something by gripping with fingers; to squeeze’; Rus. “щипать” – Chin. “捏 /niē/” ‘to pinch, to nip’; Rus. “хлопать” – “拍 /pāi/” ‘to clap with the palm’. The aim of the research is to identify the specifics of the linguocultural interpretation of tactile impact gestures as sources of metaphorization in Russian and Chinese. Its scientific novelty lies in being the first study, based on Russian and Chinese phraseological units containing the verbal components “grip”, “pinch”, “pat”, to determine the semantic and linguocultural differences in the associative-figurative reinterpretation of the corresponding tactile impacts. The results obtained show that, despite a common sensory basis, Russian and Chinese demonstrate different vectors of metaphorization and distinct national-cultural characteristics in the figurative mapping of physical tactile actions onto abstract domains (mental states, social interaction, moral and ethical evaluations). Russian gestures (жать, щипать, хлопать) are more oriented towards describing immediate bodily experience, individual physical sensations, emotional reactions, and the results of actions. Their Chinese equivalents (握, 捏, 拍) offer greater potential for the abstract construction of socio-ethical concepts, the expression of collective values, moral evaluations, and philosophical meanings, and demonstrate a high degree of language socialization and ethicization.
