Semantic and grammatical features of French vocabulary in the assimilation of the category of gender: based on the works of A. S. Pushkin

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the specific features of the relationship between Gallicisms and their prototypes at the grammatical and semantic levels. The article examines the interaction of two languages during the formation of literary norms in the first half of the 19th century. Particular attention is paid to grammatical interference, specifically the category of gender, and the derivational processes occurring within the Russian language. During this period, a linguistic unit became an element of two contacting systems simultaneously; in the process of interaction, while retaining the forms of its source language, it adopted the characteristics of the host language. This resulted in variations in semantic complexes as well as in grammatical, phonetic, and graphic forms. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, based on the texts of A. S. Pushkin, it specifies the sphere of usage for adapted lexemes with particular terminal segments and reflects the influence of French sounds on the category of gender in Russian and on the process of creating derivational meaning. In general, the study presents the similarities and differences between the two linguistic systems from a grammatical perspective and explores the role of a bilingual author in the development of the Russian language on a French foundation. The study established the functional sphere of French lexemes in A. S. Pushkin’s creative work, as well as the author’s influence on the Russification of Gallicisms in both formal-grammatical and semantic aspects.
