Abstract.
In 2026, the Altai Krai marks the 300th anniversary of the beginning of mining and metallurgical production, established by Akinfiy Demidov. Many historical sources written in German remain insufficiently studied by linguists. The study of texts from this period is part of an interdisciplinary research project at Altai State University, which involves the translation and scholarly description (historical and linguistic) of late 18th-century German-language texts concerning the history of the region. The article examines the toponymic landscape of the region within a late 18th-century German text, its integration into the cultural-historical and linguocultural context, and its connection to the history of technology and production. The research aims to describe the methods of representing various types of Russian toponyms in a German text from the late 18th century, focusing on their nomination, morphological features, and differences from modern German toponymic nomenclature. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, in addition to traditional linguistic description, the emphasis is placed on analyzing the metalinguistic comments of the author (B. F. J. Hermann) regarding the semantics and origins of these names. Particular attention is paid to the issues of semantic motivation in the formation of regional toponyms associated with the mining industry. This is the first time a linguistic analysis of this specific text has been conducted. The results demonstrate the specifics of toponym transmission in the 18th century, highlight differences from modern names of the same toponymic objects, and prove the linguocultural and linguohistorical significance of studying regional toponymy.
