Abstract.
The article examines the peculiarities of plot formation in M. Stepnova's novel "The Surgeon" from the perspective of neomythologism. It is substantiated that plot formation in the novel is built on mythological projections. In this regard, the categorical apparatus of modern literary theory is refined, with the definitions of "mythological discourse", "remythologization", and "neomyth" becoming primary for the research in relation to the specifics of 21st-century Russian prose. The influence of mythological projection on the formation of the novel's composition is illustrated. The aim of the research is to identify the mythological projections that determine the logic of plot formation in M. Stepnova's novel "The Surgeon" and play a significant role in the artistic structure of the work. The scientific novelty of the work lies in identifying and systematically describing the complex of archaic mythological models in M. Stepnova's novel "The Surgeon," which has not been the subject of a dedicated study until now. As a result, it is proven that the neomyth in the novel performs a structure-forming function: through archetypal models, the author "defamiliarizes" everyday reality, creating the image of a non-classical hero-surgeon as the bearer of an existential conflict.
