Code-switching as a tool of humor in hybrid jokes

Abstract. The paper introduces and substantiates the concept of “hybrid joke” – a type of humorous text in which the comic effect is created through the interaction of two or more linguistic systems. The aim of the study is to develop a multi-level classification of hybrid jokes based on the types of code-switching and their pragmatic effects. Based on a corpus of 150 hybrid jokes collected from Internet sources and joke collections, four main types were identified: phonetic, phonetic-translational, pragmatic (polysemy), and discursive-pragmatic (multilingual), as well as a mixed type. The paper substantiates the hypothesis that the humorous potential of code-switching is determined by two interrelated factors: the semantic unexpectedness of the code switch and the activation of intercultural stereotypes, with these factors operating in conjunction and reinforcing each other. The pragmatic functions of code-switching in hybrid jokes are identified, among which the humorous and socially-marking functions are key. The proposed typology allows for the systematization of diverse empirical material and can be used in teaching foreign languages, intercultural communication, and translation theory to develop students’ pragmatic and sociocultural competence. The scientific novelty of the work lies in introducing the concept of “hybrid joke” and developing its multi-level classification based on types of code-switching (lexical, grammatical, phonetic, pragmatic) and their humorous functions. The findings demonstrate that the humorous potential of code-switching is conditioned by two factors: the semantic unexpectedness of the code switch and the reliance on established intercultural stereotypes, with these factors acting in tandem and mutually reinforcing each other.
