Subject perspective as a grammatical mechanism for the gradation of categoricalness in Russian business discourse

Abstract. The article examines the correlation between the categoricalness of a prescription and the completeness of the subject perspective, as well as the role of the voluntative register in structuring business texts. The purpose of the study is to establish the author’s scale of tonal gradation from “coldness” to “warmth” in Russian business discourse, which possesses a grammatical nature and can be described in terms of communicative grammar – specifically through the concepts of the utterance’s subject perspective and communicative register. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the gradation of categoricalness in business discourse is described for the first time not in terms of politeness theory, but in terms of communicative grammar – as a gradation of the completeness/reduction of the subject perspective and the type of volition, making it possible to represent the “warmth” and “coldness” of a business text as grammatically quantifiable values. The findings demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed five-stage scale of categoricalness gradation, connecting grammatical exponents (nominalization, impersonal constructions, infinitive constructions with a dative subject, performative verbs, indirect directives) with a transition from official impersonality to customer-oriented addressivity; the scale is illustrated using materials from Russian business and academic speech.
