TMUTARAKAN IN THE X-XI CENTURIES

Inkov Aleksandr Aleksandrovich
Moscow University for the Humanities

Abstract. The article examines certain peculiarities of the Russian Tmutarakan princedom development in the X-XI centuries. The paper covers its relations with Russia, the highland peoples of the North Caucasus and the Byzantine Empire. Special attention is paid to discovering the reasons for Tmutarakan decay at the end of the XI century. The downfall of the latter, according to the author, should be associated not so much with the Cumans’ invasion in the South Russian steppe, as it is traditionally adopted in historical literature, as, first of all, with the decay of the Old Russian state itself, the development of appanage fragmentation in its depths, due to which Russian princes have no time to solve the problems of their Black Sea possessions.
Key words and phrases: Тмутаракань, Русь, князья-изгои, торговля, община, Tmutarakan, Russia, princes-pariahs, trade, community
