ELITE UNITS OF THE LATE ROMAN ARMY (PART 1)

Bannikov Andrei Valer'evich
Saint Petersburg State University

Abstract. In the era of the late Empire auxilia played an important role in the Roman army and performed the same tactical tasks on the battlefield as legions. It is assumed that since the days of Constantine I auxilia that were recruited from foreign barbarians became the main type of military units. However, literary and epigraphic evidence suggests the conclusion that while the number of the Germans in the army of Constantine was great, it did not mean that all of them were foreign mercenaries, and that units made up of them occupied a special position in the structure of the Roman army. At the same time, many of auxilia deservedly enjoyed fame in the IV century and were considered to be one of the most combat-ready units in the Roman army.
