STRUCTURE OF HIGHER MILITARY COMMAND IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE AT THE END OF THE III - IN THE IV CENTURY

Abstract. Radical changes in the structure of the higher military command of the Roman Empire took place at the end of the III - the beginning of the IV century. Inability to control the situation at several fronts simultaneously forced Diocletian to introduce the section of authority powers after he chose a joint ruler, and then confirm the institute of Caesars, who played a role of the military deputies of emperors-Augustuses. Constantine I or his sons introduced titles of military masters - senior officers, who commanded mobile military units. A step below them comes of military affairs stood. Frontier troops were at duxes’ disposal.
