CAUSES OF ESTABLISHING THE CULT OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT IN GREEK TOWNS OF ASIA MINOR

Abstract. The article is devoted to the clarification of the motives of establishing Alexander the Great cult in the Greek towns of Asia Minor (the coastal area and isles adjacent to it). The paper proves that a very important role while introducing this cult was played by the principle do ut des : by having established a close connection with the Macedonian King and pleased him, the civilians aspired to receive certain benefits in return in future, primarily in the kind of various privileges and charities. Besides, according to the author of the work, establishing the cult of Alexander in Asia Minor Greek communities was also caused by the feeling of gratitude for the fact that the Macedonian monarch had set the population free from the unpopular rule of both the Persians and pro-Persian minded local oligarchs and tyrants, and equally for the fact that these towns had got general and special benefits from him.
