Abstract. The article examines the formation and development of governmental-confessional relations in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia in the post-Soviet period. The author analyzes the factors influencing substantially on this process - multi-confessionalism, close interrelation of religious and ethnic components, active use of the religious factor in the political actors’ activity. The paper also examines the basic trends of cooperation between the state power bodies and the representatives of traditional confessions at the modern developmental stage.
