Abstract. Researching university as a social-educational phenomenon and the phenomenon of the european culture the author has shown that university theory formation occurred not only proceeding from society needs but also as the result of understanding the experience and problems of this unique phenomenon of the european culture, of aspiration to construct a meta-theory of classical knowledge as a whole which basic object is culture.
