STRUGGLE FOR A. LINCOLN'S NOMINATION AS CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IN CAMPAIGN OF 1860

Frolova Kira Vladimirovna
Samara State University

Abstract. The author considers the process of Abraham Lincoln nomination from the Republican Party for the U.S. presidential election in 1860, shows how the struggle between different factions of the Republicans at the end of the 1850s brought to the foreground of the nationwide electoral campaign the figure of a lawyer and politician from Illinois, little-known to most Americans before that; and describes how Lincoln managed to become the Republican candidate in 1860 due to his moderate views on the problem of slavery expansion, as well as the broad program of economic support of northerners' interests.
