HISTORIC NECROPOLIS OF BARNAUL: CONTINUITY OF TRADITIONS AND POLICY OF MEMORY OF SOVIET POWER (THE END OF 1919 – THE BEGINNING OF 1941)

Abstract. The author presents the characteristics of the historic necropolis of Barnaul during the period between the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, sets the goal to determine the specificity of cultural traditions and the state policy of memory influence on the appearance and state of the town old cemeteries, determines and describes the cemeteries of Barnaul in the 1920-1930s, reveals the names of the prominent townsmen buried there, also characterizes the reasons and process of the historic necropolis destruction, for the first time analyzes the townsmen’s attitude to the desolation and destruction of old cemeteries and the political context of these processes, and basing on newspaper, archival and published memoir sources comes to the conclusion about the persistence of the cultural traditions associated with the historic necropolis, as well as the political conditionality of its destruction.
