Abstract. The author researches the essence of fanaticism and its social and psychological characteristics, considers the phenomenon of faith as a potential basis for fanaticism development in society, raises the problems of the possibility of analyzing fanaticism in the sphere of rational as "mind deformation"; the productivity of fanaticism study as a social phenomenon and the phenomenon of consciousness, based on the original theoretical separation between mind and faith, and in the end presents it as a synthesis of conscious and unconscious elements.
