SMALL TOWN ADAPTATION UNDER CONDITIONS OF THE RUSSIAN MODERNIZATION (BY EXAMPLE OF BIRSK)

Abstract. The author, basing on the analysis of archival documents, for the first time introduced into scientific circulation, as well as the materials of statistical books and monographs, considers the process of the small town adaptation (by the example of Birsk) under the conditions of the Russian modernization from 1861 till 1991; conducts the complex analysis of the town development: the dynamics of population, economy, culture and spiritual life, reveals the main problems, which Birsk faced: the absence of railway at the whole stage of development, as well as ban on private trade and struggle against religion during the USSR existence period; and determines the most significant factors that contributed to the adaptation to the changing political and social-economic conditions of that chronological period.
