STUDYING THE KARELIAN PEOPLE’S CULTURE IN SOVIET KARELIA IN THE 1930S

Abstract. The article reveals the significance of the scientific studies of the traditional culture of the Karelians in the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the period of industrial modernization. Various forms of the professional communication of the scientists of Karelia with the leading specialists of Leningrad and Moscow and the significance of this cooperation for the development of folklore studies and linguistics in Karelia are characterized. Special attention is paid to the fact how the specificity of the national policy in frontier Karelia affected the development of science, how the results of the studies were used for strengthening Soviet statehood, and the propaganda of socialism achievements.
