Abstract. The issue of the participation of the Karachays and the Karachay-Balkars in the First World War has not been a subject of special research despite its importance for the study of both the history of this "forgotten war" and Russian - North Caucasian relations as a whole. The contribution of the mountain communities to the formation of the Kabardian cavalry regiment, the heroic deeds of front-line soldiers, the organization of material aid to the front are revealed. The topicality of this research is determined by the more profound study of the military events, as well as social significance, which furthers the strengthening of all-Russian identity.
