"TRANSPARENCY" AND "ROTATING DISK" IN THE BYZANTINE ICONOGRAPHY. SPECIFICS OF INTERCONNECTION

Abstract. The article reveals the symbolic meaning of the poorly explored iconographic element "transparency" in the Byzantine religious painting. The paper aims to analyze the origins and to identify the possible prototypes of such images, which could influence the developed Byzantine iconographic tradition. The researcher provides a comparative analysis and explores the possibility for the similarity of "transparency" and such plot of the Byzantine iconography as "rotating disk". She concludes on their likeness according to a number of features.
