FOUNDATION OF THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ECCLESIASTICAL MISSION IN JAPAN

Abstract. The article examines the beginning of the missionary work of the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church, hieromonk, and later archbishop Nikolay (secular name Ivan Dmitrievich Kasatkin) in Japan, contains the material demonstrating the peculiarities of the Russian missionary work among the local population in Japan, says that the success of this activity was less outstanding than that of the western missions as the Russian mission played the role of an original "bearer" of religious-cultural influence and didn’t aim at interfering in the internal affairs of the country.
