MARITAL SEPARATIONS IN MARRIAGES OF RUSSIAN NARODNIKS AND UKRAINIAN POPULISTS (THE 1870-1800S)

Abstract. The article is devoted to marital separations in the marriages of Russian narodniks and Ukrainian populists in the 1870-1800s. Relying on published and archival sources including little-known letters from the Kovalevskys’ archive the author analyzes the causes and process of the separation of the partners by the example of the Kovalevskys’ and the Podolinskys’ marriages. The study allows concluding that the reasons to stop living together in such marriages were both ideological differences and the high level of the emancipation of women-narodniks.
