Abstract. On the basis of personal sources the author reveals the features of the creative image of the historian P. P. Smirnov (1882-1947). Attention paid to sociocultural context in modern historiographical researches stipulates the study of the "non-scientific" components of knowledge directly or indirectly affecting the final result. The reconstruction of such aspects of P. P. Smirnov’s life world as attitude to the "craft" of a historian, organizational skills, teaching activity, and polemical nature allows, ultimately, understanding the nature of the scientist’s professional interests, the originality of his works, and the style of his speeches.
