MILITARY AND COSSACK COLONIZATION OF NORTH-EASTERN CAUCASUS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY: PURPOSES AND SPECIFICS OF REALIZATION

Abstract. The article emphasizes the dual nature of the government’s resettlement policy: it was concerned to create a social basis represented by the Russian population of the region but was careful to avoid peasantry outflow from inner Russia. Under the Caucasian war conditions and the lack of security for civil population the government tended to increase military and Cossack population, which was replenished by different ways.
