Abstract. The publication analyzes the process of the evolution and destruction of the community and specific features and peculiarities of Orenburg and Siberian Cossacks. Contrary to some researchers, the author does not emphasize the conscious extermination of the Cossacks by Soviet power but shows objective tendencies while transforming the former estate and destroying the basis of its material existence - the Cossacks’ rural community.
