MEDIEVAL "GIFT EXCHANGE" CULTURE IN A. J. GUREVICH’S INTERPRETATION

Abstract. The article by the example of the historian A. J. Gurevich’s works examines the problem of interpreting medieval "gift exchange" culture, which is one of the universal means of the social and cultural communication of archaic societies. According to A. J. Gurevich, this institution in medieval societies performed an important function of social communication, but at the same time it included deep cultural content that took an important place in the medieval human’s consciousness and had a magic nature.
