Abstract. The article is devoted to shamanism as a special sociocultural phenomenon, its origin and evolution. Particular attention is paid to the connection of this phenomenon with the mythological mentality of archaic consciousness. A specific feature of the system of views on the world, which gave birth to shamanism, is an idea of ??the possibility of the direct interaction and control of spirits. The author singles out the role and functions performed by the shaman in the society.
