ENEMY IMAGE: SPANIARDS IN THE EVIDENCES OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF FRANCIS DRAKE’S ROUND-THE-WORLD EXPEDITION

Mikheev Dmitrii Vladimirovich
Pskov State University

Abstract. The article is devoted to analyzing the problem of "enemy-Spaniard" image formation in the Elizabethan England. Using new sources, in particular, the memories of Francis Drake’s round-the-world expedition (1577-1580) the author identifies the basic elements of Protestant sailors’ negative perception of Spaniards: treachery, cruelty and cowardice. The English sources manifest the tendency to emphasize moral and cultural supremacy of Drake and his companions, their religious isolation in comparison with Spaniards.
