SORCERERS AND WITCHCRAFT IN BELIEFS AND SUPERSTITIONS OF THE MORDVINS

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of such a phenomenon of spiritual culture of the Mordvins, as witchcraft, and to description of its practitioners - sorcerers. The author, on the basis of ethnographic sources, oral field materials and ethnological literature, studies beliefs and superstitions about magicians, origin of their supernatural power and ways of their harmful influence in order to comprehend more deeply a number of problems associated with their formation as an independent form of social consciousness.
